Our Leading Release of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Secures the Top Spot.

Initially, this album could seem more like an arduous academic challenge than the latest popular music album by an artist whose last single was a collaboration with a global K-pop star. Split into 4 different sections and performed in 13 tongues, we have a dizzying symphonic album that delves into female mystery, religious transcendence, and physical change, frequently through the lens of different female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic treated with raw honesty elsewhere—soars skyward on this record, buoyed by the constant sound of a full symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning composer within a long list of collaborators. Its sheer ambition by itself makes the efforts of contemporary pop stars appear rather small.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

That this album succeeds in escape overly intellectual posturing feels nothing short of a miracle, with full credit going to the artist. While it's not her first project to fuse historical sounds with modern styles, its scale are far greater on Lux, with the balancing act more dramatic. What truly elevates this fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and engrained theatricality, is a core spirit of playfulness. Much like the iconic Björk at her peak, there is a captivating quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps you into its whirlwind. When she is tearing your heart in two, you still want to be right there for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit comes forth clearly during a stunning Italian ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over more than four minutes. Then, everything falls silent, to reveal there's a spontaneous giggle and a comment before a comically over-the-top string surge thuds in like comedic force. The track then shifts to the wild single featuring racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The magic of Lux lies in the listener never exactly understand—nor want to know—what it is going to next."

Almost every track ends at a completely different place from how it started. A track examines the transient nature of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating in digital cacophony. Another, a cut echoing her earlier rhythmic style begins out dark and brooding, featuring menacing beats, until sudden traditional handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to soften its jagged corners.

The Balance Of Art and Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act on the album involves straddling the line between radical innovation and mainstream appeal. This is no surprise that it has achieved her first release to break into the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a collection of utterly catchy pop songs. One track performed primarily in the English language swells around a refrain that feels to collect increasingly infectious melodies while it spins upward. This trick gets repeated on another powerful ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining layered melodies like an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused number seduces via its jaunty, theatrical flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it shares the cultural impact of other breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Across the album, the singing carry a sharp smile, like a storybook figure concealing a blade: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry in an era of impending artificial sameness. It eschews solipsism for sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic spectacle that skillfully controls its own inherent excess. This is an abundant well of buried gems that requires time to completely explore but never seem like a chore. Where other major releases of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a sumptuous banquet where the guests at it, some tipsy on sacred wine, flutter between discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about useless men. It is a contemporary musical from pop's most endlessly inventive visionary.
